The title of this work ‘Ernest et Pierre’ is a playful reference to the American writer Ernest Hemingway and French painter Pierre Bonnard meeting in writer, art critic and influential artist champion Gertrude Stein's salons in Paris. No one knows if they did meet there, although Hemingway was a friend of Stein’s and learned a great deal from her about art; he collected artists based on her recommendations. And both Bonnard and Hemingway contributed to ‘Verve’, a modernist Parisian art and literary magazine published in Paris. The ideas of leaving America/home, being fundamentally changed and deepened by European experiences and culture are ones that resonate with me and are explored in this colourful, enigmatic mixed media piece which also uses collage elements to add texture and detail to the work. The book ‘Moveable Feast’ was particularly on my mind as I worked on this - it is a series of evocative essays by a young and struggling Hemingway during his first years post WWI after leaving journalism and working to become a writer of fiction.
